Accessing the Great Lakes is essential and one of the best ways is to use a well-known location to set out into the water from. Lake Superior lies to the east from the ports of Minnesota.

As you get to know the state and area better there may be less busy areas but of the recognised Great Lakes Ports - Minnesota has:

Two Harbours, Duluth and Grand Marais are the main Great Lakes Ports of Minnesota.

Great Lakes of America - Lake Superior.

Lake Superior being the largest lake for Minnesota the nearby locations you might want to check out include the Isla National Park and Voyageurs National Park.

Be aware that while out in the lake you've got Canadian waters nearby to the north, an experienced boat captain is important.
