Shipwreck Data Max Depth - 40 - 50 Meters. Visibility - 5 - 20 feet Condition - Intact as a whole, smashed superstructure (torpedo impact) Date of Sinking - 1918 Location for launch - Brighton The HMS Moldovia was originally a P and O liner nearly of over 500 feet in length. Near the end of WW1, while on patrol as a merchant escort, a German U-Boat (UB-57) successfully torpedoed and sunk the vessel. 56 of the crew were US troops all of which perished.
This is a large wreck, best seen over several dives. The highest point of the wreck is at about 36 meters, so there's something for recreational divers along with technical divers at this site. Keep an eye out when you are at the bow section. We're informed that thick trawler netting has entangled there and stretches all the way to the surface. When the visibility is good here, it's very good, approaching blue-water conditions. It can be very bad also, depending on when you are diving. |
