GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECK

LAKESIDE DIVING

THE CEDARVILLE

ShipWreck - The Cedarville

The Story so far:

The prop-driven vessel was contructed back in 1927 by Great Lakes Engineering and measured 588x60x32 (Ft) and weighted over 8500 tons (US). Built as a bulk freighter she was converted to be a self-unloader in 1957.

On May 7 1965 just 3 miles east of the Mackinac Bridge, Lake Huron/Lake Michigan (Straits Area Preserve) the Cedarvilles date with destiny occured. Moving swiftly through the fog she collided with the Norwegian freighter Topdalsfyord at about 9:50 am and sank quickly. Despite the German vessel Weissenburg arriving to pick up the survivors ten crew lost their lives.
